| John's Goals & Vision: I was first drawn to the idea of reducing the impact we are making on the Earth in the mid 90's. As my remodeling business grew, I gained a better understanding of just how much unused space we have in our homes and the amount of wasted energy that we go through trying to keep them comfortable. I got more involved in trying to make a difference in 1997 when I visited an eco-focused community outside of Douglas, AZ. I had the opportunity to help with, and learn about the wonderful world of sustainable building development using straw bale, paper-crete, recycled materials, and passive solar design, all combined with the necessities to make comfortable, efficient, small (300 sf. or so) homes. I have been blessed (or cursed) with "green thinking" ideas ever since. I've believed for some time that we need to reduce the impact we are making on the earth, mainly for the practical matter of reducing the pollution we all can see, feel, taste and smell everywhere we go, and the effects it has on everything - including us. I do think that with better, more efficient use of the resources we have been given on this planet, that we can make a long lasting difference. The recent volatility and increases in the price of energy as of late, highlights the practicality and need for increased conservation, better dwelling space utilization and smarter product ideas. The trend toward smaller efficient homes / more people living in each home is inevitable, though I'm not proposing we all dwell in 200 sf. homes to be conservative, my goal is to help make that a realistic and comfortable option if we choose to do so. Additionally, I'm a firm believer that we don't have to out-source the bulk of our work overseas, ship products 1000's of miles across oceans, use abusive labor practices, and avoid environmental protection standards - all to save a few bucks. We will strive to produce all of the DSBS here in the U.S., be competitive in the marketplace, offer quick turnaround custom orders, and offer sales of environmentally low impact and affordable product. |
