FAQ's
Here are a list of the most frequently asked questions about our Double Space Beds.
International Sunday
FAQ's

Can the bed fall?

No - in fact, the bed is safer than any convertible bed currently on the market:

1) The Double Space Bed is a stable, free standing piece of furniture. It's safety is independent of the surrounding structure, and does not rely on being mounted to any surface. All you need is a floor, and you're good to go.

2) The Double Space Bed uses a patent pending, Balanced Movement System that is made of heavy duty, industrial parts. The weakest link that holds the bed up is rated at 5x to 10x the working load limit, and 40x to 50 x the ultimate load limit (the applied weight that is great enough to break it).

3) It would literally require a catastrophic failure of a movement system component for the bed to fall, which is very unlikely.

4) When the bed is raised, the movement system naturally keeps it in the raised position without the need for latches or pins. We have purposely not installed any means of latching the bed in the raised position in order prevent the use of the bed platform as a storage device.

Can I use my own mattress?

Yes - in fact, any style mattress can be used:

Any mattress can be used with the Double Space Bed - whether it is a standard innerspring, air type, or a heavy latex foam type mattress (heavier mattresses may require additional fill weight to be added to the
counterweights)

Can the bed be made taller or shorter?

Yes, higher but not shorter (for now):

The overall height if the Double Space Bed is 7'-10.5", which fits under most ceilings.  The bed can have blocks set up under the columns when built-out and installed.  We are working on an adjustable height columns for
sometime in '2011.

What is the height under the bed?

That is a variable height range as well:

Right at 80", although depending upon how the bed is set up, the bed can go as high as 83" under the platform.  An extra thick mattress will effect this height - if the ceiling is in close proximity, keeping the bed platform from
fully raising (due to the mattress hitting the ceiling).

Is the bed difficult to move (up and down)?

No:

1)  The Balanced Movement System allows easy, smooth movement, in fact my 3 year old niece can easily move the bed, although she cannot reach it by herself.

2)  The Balanced Movement System keeps the bed perfectly level throughout travel, and you can pull or push on the bed anywhere to move it.  The Balanced Movement System will operate smoothly for years to come, as the components are all industrial grade and built to last.

Is there a motorized version available?

Not yet, but plans for one are in the works:

We are developing a motor assisted version that will work with the existing, safe and reliable movement system.  The motor will only assist in the movement of the bed, and all other aspects of the beds operation will remain the same, thus avoiding reliance upon latches and brakes to keep the bed in the raised position, or slow moving screw type movements.  This assist only model will still allow easy manual movement of the bed in the event of a
power failure.

Can I customize the bed, or add crown moulding to the bed?

Yes, you can clad the bed in any style panels/styles:

1)  The Double Space Beds inner framework allows for use of virtually any style of panel and trim (including crown moulding), see our Gallery page for conceptual styles of panels and trim.

2)  The bed platform ceiling has been designed to use drop in panels that can be made from virtually any material: including wood, sheet metal, ceiling tile type fibrous material, frames with stretched cloth, etc.  This system allows for further customization, and makes it easy to change the look.

What about repairs and service?

Easy, and convenient repairs can be done.

1)  The Double Space Beds - Balanced Movement System  is made from industrial components that are rated at many, many times the given duty cycle, this makes it doubtful that any movement system repair will ever be needed.  In the event of repair needs, all components are bolted together, and are fully replaced.

2)  All of the outer wooden furniture panels and trim on the Double Space Bed are simply screwed into place (mostly from within the inner framework).  This makes repairs, replacement, and refinishing the furniture a cinch by simply opening the access panels on the columns, and unscrewing the panels and trim - another benefit to this type of inner framework set-up, is that if you get tired of the look, you can just change it out.
